Want a Better Summer Lawn? Start With the Right Grass Seed
Discover why grass variety matters during Pennsylvania summers and how Sunny Seed Mix, fall overseeding, and proper care produce stronger turf.

Here is something homeowners in the Lehigh Valley do not always hear from lawn care companies: treatments can only do so much if the lawn is composed of grass varieties that struggle on the property.
Fertilizer cannot turn the wrong grass into the right grass. Weed control cannot fix a lawn that lacks strong, desirable turf. Even an excellent lawn care program may produce disappointing summer results if the existing grass varieties cannot tolerate the property's heat, soil, sunlight, and normal use.
That is why we created Sunny Seed Mix.
Sunny Seed Mix is our custom grass-seed blend, selected for homeowners who want to establish stronger, more attractive turf for conditions across the Lehigh Valley. It will not make a lawn maintenance-free. No seed can overcome every problem. But starting with the right plant can make everything else you do for the lawn more productive.
Spring and Fall Can Hide a Lawn's Weaknesses in the Lehigh Valley
Most lawns in the Lehigh Valley contain cool-season grasses. As the name suggests, these grasses perform best during cooler periods. That is why many lawns look good during:
- Early spring
- Mid-to-late spring
- Early fall
- Mid-to-late fall
Temperatures are favorable, moisture may be more readily available, and the grass is actively growing. Even a minimally maintained cool-season lawn can sometimes look surprisingly good during these periods. That appearance does not necessarily tell you how the lawn will perform under stress.
Summer Reveals What Kind of Lawn You Really Have
The real test normally arrives between approximately mid-June and mid-September. This is when a lawn may face:
- Sustained heat
- Dry conditions
- Increased foot traffic
- Mowing stress
- Insect or disease pressure
- Watering problems
- Compacted soil
- Competition between desirable grass and weeds
During spring, two neighboring lawns may look equally green. By July or August, one may retain better color and density while the other becomes thin, brown, or overwhelmed by weeds.
Homeowners sometimes assume this difference is entirely the result of fertilizer or lawn treatments. Those services matter, but the grass varieties growing in each lawn can make an enormous difference.
Why Is My Neighbor's Lawn Greener Than Mine?
Your neighbor may appear to do almost nothing and still have greener grass. That does not necessarily mean your lawn care program is failing. Their lawn may contain a grass variety that is better suited to summer stress, their soil may hold moisture differently, or the property may receive different amounts of sunlight and traffic.
Sometimes we inspect a mostly brown summer lawn and find isolated patches that remain dark green. When we examine them closely, we discover a hardy grass type that is tolerating the conditions better than the surrounding turf.
Those patches are evidence of an important principle: The plant itself matters.
However, color is not the only consideration. Some older or coarse grasses may remain green but produce a clumpy, uneven texture that many homeowners do not want. The objective is to balance appearance, texture, density, adaptability, and stress tolerance.
What Is Sunny Seed Mix?
Sunny Seed Mix is Golden Green's custom-blended grass seed for sunny lawns in the Lehigh Valley and Eastern Pennsylvania.
The mix was developed using decades of local field experience and rigorous testing. It contains premium turf-type tall fescue and elite Kentucky bluegrass selected to complement one another and perform under local conditions.
Our goals when selecting the mix include:
- Attractive color
- Desirable texture
- Improved turf density
- Adaptability to sunny properties
- Better competition against weeds
- Greater tolerance of normal summer stress
- Strong performance within a complete lawn care program
Sunny Seed Mix is not a generic, one-variety solution. It is intended to help establish a diverse, resilient stand of desirable turf. Sunny Seed Mix is blended specifically for Golden Green and is not sold through local retail stores.
Can You Almost Do Nothing After Planting Sunny Seed Mix?
Not literally. Sunny Seed Mix still requires proper establishment and ongoing care. It needs suitable soil contact, moisture during germination, appropriate mowing, adequate nutrients, and reasonable protection from environmental stress.
The important point is that a strong grass variety gives you a better foundation. Think of it this way: lawn treatments support the plants already growing on the property. If those plants are weak, poorly adapted, or undesirable, the program is starting at a disadvantage. Introducing carefully selected grass varieties allows the lawn care program to support turf you actually want to keep.
What Sunny Seed Mix Cannot Correct by Itself
Even high-quality seed can struggle when a lawn has:
There is no perfect grass and no maintenance-free lawn. Sunny Seed Mix should be part of a complete plan, not treated as a miracle product.
Why We Recommend Aeration and Overseeding Every Fall
Existing lawns usually contain a mixture of old and new grasses. Some varieties may be desirable, while others may be thin, coarse, weak, or poorly suited to the property. Unless the entire lawn is removed and reestablished, one overseeding visit will not instantly replace all the existing turf.
That is why we frequently recommend core aeration and overseeding during September.
Core aeration creates openings in compacted turf and can improve the opportunity for seed to reach the soil. Overseeding introduces additional desirable grass plants into the existing lawn. Repeating this process allows Sunny Seed Mix to occupy more of the lawn over time.
How to Help Sunny Seed Mix Perform During Summer
The grass variety is the foundation, but summer performance also depends on how the lawn is managed.
Mow at Approximately 3½ Inches
We generally recommend maintaining established cool-season turf at approximately 3½ inches during hot weather, depending on the grass and property. Taller grass can support a larger root system, shade the soil, and help protect the lawn from summer stress. Avoid removing too much of the grass blade during one mowing.
Keep Mower Blades Sharp
A dull mower blade tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly. Torn tips can make a freshly mowed lawn appear tan or ragged and add unnecessary stress. Inspect and sharpen mower blades regularly during the growing season.
Water Deeply Instead of Briefly Every Day
Established lawns generally benefit from deeper, less frequent watering rather than a short daily sprinkle. As a starting point, a lawn may require approximately one inch of water in a week, but the correct amount and schedule depend on rainfall, temperature, soil type, drainage, sun exposure, grass condition, and local watering restrictions.
Water during the early morning when possible. Apply water slowly enough to enter the soil without creating runoff. Do not blindly water on a fixed schedule. Check the lawn and soil, account for rainfall, and adjust to current conditions.
Avoid Applying Extra Fertilizer as a Quick Fix
More fertilizer does not automatically create a greener summer lawn. Excessive or poorly timed fertilizer can increase stress or create other problems. Follow a program based on the lawn's needs, seasonal timing, product directions, and applicable nutrient limits.
Build a Better Lawn From the Plant Up
A lawn care program should do more than repeatedly treat the grass that happens to be present. It should help establish and support desirable plants suited to the property.
If your lawn looks good in spring and fall but struggles every summer, it may be time to examine more than the fertilizer schedule. The grass varieties, soil, watering, mowing, and overseeding history all deserve attention.
Sunny Seed Mix gives us a better plant to build around. Combine it with fall aeration and overseeding, appropriate mowing, sharp blades, responsible watering, and a thoughtful soil program, and your lawn has a stronger opportunity to stand apart.
